By recounting and deconstructing therapeutic experiences with clients, contributors collectively demonstrate how narratives shape and humanize therapists' work, and how the process of therapy enriches our understanding of narratives and their place in contemporary studies of human identity.

CHOICE Review

This book is the third release in "The Narrative Study of Lives" series, which explores the role of narrative story in constructing human reality. The authors of these essays consider the many ways in which individuals construct narratives to describe the events of their own lives. John McLeod provides an overview of the role of narratives in psychotherapy, and he describes how sociocultural context shapes the construction of story and provides possibilities for altering life stories. Other contributors look at the nonclinical population of adult children of Holocaust survivors and discover a style of managing and creating story that includes elements of conscious not knowing, not telling. Other essays review the Alcoholics Anonymous tradition of testimony, which shapes stories of shame into recovery. Oriented more toward theory than practice, this title will best fit into collections of works on modern theories of counseling. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
