In Our Own Selves, Michael Gorman creates 100 new meditations specifically addressing the issues at the heart of the library profession. Reaffirming the value of librarianship and reintroducing the joys that make it unlike any other vocation, Gorman expands and follows up on his popular first collection of meditations.

Library Journal Review

A follow-up to Gorman's first collection of meditations, Our Singular Strengths, this book has ten chapters--"Reading and Books," "Places," "People," "Values," "Library Services," "Then and Now," "Technology," "Practicalities," "The Eightfold Path," and "This and That." Within each broad topic is a series of two-page essays that begin with a literary quote and end with a moral/axiom, or what the author calls "a resolution." In succinct, readable prose, Gorman addresses issues affecting the library profession, including, yes, bloggers. Whether or not you are a fan of the newly inducted American Library Association president, this second collection is more than worth the effort and should be required reading for all "librarians." May he continue "meditating!"--B. Susan Brown, Pamunkey Regional Lib., VA (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
