The recent terrorist outrages perpetrated against the United States demonstrate the need for a new and rigorous study of modern terrorism. In Tapestry of Terror , Richard J. Chasdi offers fresh insight into the complexities of state-sponsored and nonstate terrorism. Building on the research methods and findings discussed in his previous work, Serenade of Suffering , which covers Middle East terrorism in the period 1968 to 1993, Chasdi presents a detailed statistical and quantitative analysis of four Middle East terrorist systems: in Algeria, Turkey, Egypt, and Israel. He pinpoints the socioeconomic conditions that breed and sustain terrorism, the political factors that ignite terrorist attacks, and those individuals or groups most frequently targeted by terrorists. Tapestry of Terror charts the increasing frequency and intensity of intrastate terrorism in the 1990s; the growing threat posed to Western nations by international terrorism; and the counter-terrorist stratagems and policy decisions needed-now more than ever-to defend against highly coordinated, immensely destructive assaults.ons needed-now more than ever-to defend against highly coordinated, immensely destructive assaults.ons needed-now more than ever-to defend against highly coordinated, immensely destructive assaults.ons needed-now more than ever-to defend against highly coordinated, immensely destructive assaults.

CHOICE Review

This is Chasdi's second book on Middle Eastern terrorism. In Serenade of Suffering (CH, May'00), he focused on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Here he investigates acts of political violence in Algeria, Egypt, Turkey, and the Israel-Palestine conflict between 1994 and 1999. As in his first book, Chasdi (College of Wooster) uses an empirical approach based on rigorous quantitative analysis, which sets it apart from other books on terrorism. Chapters 1 and 2 include an operational definition of terrorism, a three-dimensional terrorist group typology, a matrix of group formation, and methodological information. Sources of data for statistical analysis include the Jerusalem Post, the Foreign Broadcast Information Service, the Joint Publications Research Service, and Keesings Record of World Events. For situational information on terrorist groups in each country, only English-language sources are used, leaving untapped the large cache of native publications, especially in Arabic, that would have enriched the study. In his preface, Chasdi argues for the relevance of his findings to the cataclysm of 9/11 by pointing to the US's lack of attention to antecedent political and social conditions that lead to terrorist acts. This sound advice is sadly muted in official circles. Scholars, analysts, and strategists should benefit from this book and its many figures, tables, two indexes, and bibliography. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
