CHOICE Review

Most of this book's contributors are members of the Academy of Organizational and Occupational Psychiatry, founded in 1990 to address the contributions of psychiatry to workplace mental health solutions. All have had extensive experience in organizational consulting and university teaching. Although the complex interplay of individual emotions and organizational function has long been a focus of attention in the literature, particularly in recent years, this book bridges the gap between psychiatry and the workplace to an extent not seen before. The presentation progresses from general problems (symptoms, reasons, treatment) through specifics (disability, executive distress, organizational change, job loss, executive development, crises, family problems) to common employee problems (anxiety, depression, personality disorders and style, drug and alcohol abuse, psychosis, psychosomatics). The book's outstanding feature is its success in integrating material through the liberal use of case studies, creating the impression of psychiatry whose practitioners have a substantial, concrete sense of humanity and compassion, despite the seriousness of problems encountered in the workplace. The book is exceptionally well edited despite the large number of contributors, and each chapter includes an abstract, summary, and bibliography. It deserves a wide audience including professionals in mental health, human resources, and management. General; advanced undergraduate through professional. D. Sydiaha; University of Saskatchewan
