Useful for anyone interested in US environment, resources, and economy and their changes during the 21st century, this assessment is based on climate variability and change. It discusses US regions including Alaska, islands, and Native peoples' homelands and looks at sectors such as agriculture, water, human health, coastal areas, marine resources, and forests. Considerable input is obtained from two computer models that agree on unprecedented warming, with higher summer heat indexes, threatening to human health but offering helpful warmer winters. The models show a greater frequency of very wet and very dry conditions. Some crops and forests will benefit; other ecosystems will have to change. Water quality and availability are adequately discussed, but the report cautions that model output on precipitation, soil moisture, and runoff may be unreliable.
