An invaluable teaching text and clinical resource, this is a book about how to do psychotherapy--how to apply the science of change to the complexities of helping people develop new meanings in their lives. Explaining constructivist principles and illuminating what a skilled clinician actually does in day-to-day practice, Michael J. Mahoney shows how to nurture the therapeutic relationship while implementing such creative interventions as centering techniques, problem solving, pattern work, meditation and embodiment exercises, drama and dream work, and spiritual exploration. Appendices feature reproducible client forms, handouts, and other useful materials.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 265-294) and index.

CHOICE Review

Mahoney (Saybrook Graduate School and Univ. of North Texas) has many wise things to say in this important book on psychotherapy. His observations come from both his clinical experience and his mastery of the literature of psychotherapy and counseling. Mahoney offers several therapeutic techniques and a general philosophy of how to be an effective therapist. Despite this, however, the author fails to specify clearly what methods work with whom, and under what circumstances. This contrasts with Michael York and David Cooper, who offer not only comprehensive theory but discussion of efficacy of treatments in their A Unifying Approach to the Theories and Practice of Psychotherapy and Counseling (2001). Mahoney's postmodern viewpoint is consistent with the position that all reality is subjective. For him and other like-minded therapists, the notion of subjective reality requires that primary emphasis be placed on the therapeutic relationship. Again by contrast, York and Cooper state that although the therapeutic relationship is necessary, it is not sufficient for effective therapy, which requires appropriate technique. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
