A future oriented volume looking into new methods of productive research into domestic violence and the maltreatment of children. Whilst it is known that many children are severely affected by domestic violence, some appear to come through the experience unscathed and it is unclear what protects these children and how the larger community and social environment impedes of enhances adjustment in their families. Contributors discuss the various measures and methods of analyzing data, the effectiveness of intervention and the implications for public policy to give a better understanding of the impact of domestic violence on children.

CHOICE Review

Child survivors of domestic violence cope with their traumatic experiences in various ways, some of them better than others. How to understand and help these children is a national priority for study, clinical practice, prevention research, and policy. Preventing the damage of domestic violence and the fallout on a child's future is a daunting challenge. Looking at the critical impact of domestic violence in the lives of children, Graham-Bermann and Edleson focus on integrating separate areas of domestic violence and child maltreatment research and charting new directions for research. In three sections--understanding children's exposure to domestic violence, the context of family and social support, and prevention and evaluation--the editors examine cutting-edge methodology and best research practices and provide much-needed meta-analysis of various research studies. Clinicians and researchers will find the chapters on children's resilience, ethically sound research with children, overcoming blame, and the role of fathers particularly useful. Graham-Bermann looks at the success and practicalities of designing evidence-based direct intervention programs for children. The prevention section examines implications for policy, research, and public programs for children, adolescents, and adults. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. S. M.
