CHOICE Review
Like its sister publication American Cultural Leaders, by Justin Harmon et al. (CH, Apr'94), this set contains brief bibliographic essays about individuals and groups (such as The Beatles) from a wide range of literature, art, film, dance, music, and theater. Entries are meant to "represent a broad slice of world cultural developments of the twentieth century." Americans are excluded from the more than 400 entries, with the exception of those whose work has "significant international dimensions." Each essay places the individual or group in a global context, discusses important biographical information and contributions to their fields, and concludes with a limited bibliography (usually two to three biographical monographs). A list of leaders by occupation is somewhat helpful, but lacks references from broad to specific fields. A glossary supplements the essays with some key movements and proper names, such as "atonality" and "the Petersburg Ballet." The name, title, and subject index is inconsistently comprehensive--for example, some titles of works mentioned in an artist's essay may be indexed, others not. Recommended for high school and public libraries because of its broad scope and convenience, but academic libraries with strong reference collections in the arts and humanities will not need this title.
