Library Journal Review
Donahue (law, Univ. of Wyoming) has compiled a top-notch reference work on environmental law. The approximately 200 terms included here range from art terms to court cases to federal government acronyms, but the focus is primarily on conservation and natural resource issues. This coverage works well because it gives legal professionals a better scientific footing and offers scientists a source for finding legal information. Each entry contains an informative historical or scientific explanation of the term and how it fits into the larger environmental law framework. Entries, which run anywhere from a few paragraphs to several pages, are cross-referenced to other related terms and are uniformly well written and current. Donahue also goes the extra step and includes tables of cases, statutes, regulations, acronyms, and environmental organizations as well as a comprehensive index, enabling the dictionary to be used as a guide to legal sources. An introduction provides a helpful overview of natural resource management issues. Donahue's book demonstrates her understanding and expertise in conservation issues and the law. Her book begins with a history of the conservation movement and conservation law that considers contemporary issues. Most of the book consists of alphabetical entries that describe conservation issues. Entries range from people (Bruce Babbit) to scientific and legal terms ("taking" and "desertification") to cases. The descriptions are understandable and substantial, and there are cross-references to other entries. The book ends with a set of extremely useful tables (cases, statutes, regulations, acronyms) and a directory of organizations. The bibliography provides an excellent start for background reading. Donahue succeeds admirably in her aim to design a book "to help the reader understand what the law of conservation encompasses and how it works." Recommended for academic and public library collections. C. Rinaldo; Dartmouth CollegeBooklist Review
These two volumes in the Contemporary Legal Issues series provide A^-Z coverage of significant issues, terms, and concepts in their respective fields. Children, Young Adults, and the Law has entries such as biological parent, Grandparent Visitation Statute, and school safety; while Conservation and the Law defines such terms as ecosystem management, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act of 1980, and range reform. The intent of the series is to address legal issues in language understandable to the general reader.Notas de autor provistas por Syndetics
