School Library Journal Review

Gr 10 Up-This interesting and balanced title contains excerpts from primary documents and other sources, including declassified government information. Following an introduction that provides the history of the crisis, there are selections from materials by John F. Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev, Fidel Castro, and Robert Kennedy, and each entry carries a bibliographic footnote. The detailed chronology provides a helpful overview starting in 1957, when the Soviet Union launched its first ICBM and its first spaceship, through 1963; the index is reasonably complete. The complex themes may prove difficult to those who are not strong readers, but this book will give students an understanding of a difficult time in American history.-Tracy Ansley, formerly at Cary Academy, NC (c) Copyright 2010.
