Mass Spectrometry (MS) has rapidly become an indispensable tool in polymer analysis, and modern MS today complements in many ways the structural data provided by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Infrared (IR) methods. Recent advances have sparked a growing interest in this field and established a need for a summary of progress made and results achieved.

Mass Spectrometry of Polymers effectively fills this need. The discussion begins by introducing MS in detail, providing a historical perspective and a review of modern instrumentation and methods. The text then focuses on mathematical concepts and practical algorithms used in some of the major quantitative polymer applications of MS, providing a skillful prologue to polymer characterization techniques. Detailed chapters follow, describing the most relevant applications of MS to the analysis of polymers and the techniques currently employed.

Authored by internationally recognized experts from academia and industry, Mass Spectrometry of Polymers is the only state-of-the-art work available that deals systematically with this rapidly emerging discipline, and will be useful to both novices and experienced practitioners in polymer MS.

CHOICE Review

Mass spectrometry (MS) shares center stage with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as the indispensable tool of chemistry and physics for characterizing polymer properties. The growth of the field and its special importance are easily measured by the exponential growth of the literature over the past half century. MS of polymers has now emerged as a field in its own right for the special issues of high molecular weight, dispersity, endgroups, impurities, additives, copolymers, blends and mixtures, unnatural and natural biopolymers. So it is not at all surprising that a comprehensive monograph on this technique should emerge to address the needs of professionals in the field. That is what the publisher has produced, with clarity, judicious choice of topics and references, and careful book smithing. This skillful rendering of the state of the art in modern methods also provides two of the best introductory chapters written to date, by way of general introduction to MS and summary of MS characterization methods. All together, there are 11 chapters, more than a thousand references (current to 2001), and a uniform level and writing style unusual in such collections. Quite a feat and worth the money, which is not out of line by current professional standards. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. L. W. Fine Columbia University
