Phycology is the study of algae, a ubiquitous and extremely important range of species ecologically because of the dependence of other species on their primary production. This third edition of Phycology is designed to serve both as a textbook for a one-semester course and also as a reference on modern concepts in the study of algae. Algae are divided into four natural groups and chapters on each group cover the cytology, morphology, physiology, life cycles, ecology and systematics, all presented in a manner that can be understood by readers with a basic knowledge of biology. The use of clear, concise drawings, as well as the special emphasis placed on those algae that are commonly covered in phycology courses, and encountered by students in marine and freshwater habitats, has led to the establishment of this book as a classic introductory text suitable for courses throughout the world.

CHOICE Review

Lee (Colorado State Univ.) offers 18 chapters divided into five parts on the basis of the number of endoplasmic reticulums (ER) surrounding the chloroplast. In this new edition (1st ed., CH, Apr'81; 2nd ed., 1989), part 1 is an excellent introduction to algal physiology and classification; part 2 discusses the prokaryotic algae, including toxins in this group. Part 3 includes the red and green algae, which have no ER membranes surrounding the chloroplast. Part 4 explores the algae with one ER membrane surrounding the chloroplast, the Euglenoids and the dinoflagellates. The remainder of the book is devoted to the algae with two ER membranes surrounding the chloroplast; these include the brown algae, diatoms and chrysophytes, and other smaller groups. Each chapter presents the current understanding of cell structure, with some of the more interesting and useful information from the nutrition, physiology, and ecology of each group. One of the most unusual additions to the book is the collection of photographs and short biographies of the more prominent scientists studying each group. Chapters are well illustrated, primarily with drawings and electron micrographs, and numerous chemical structures and graphs. An excellent introduction to the current knowledge of algae. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. J. Dawson; Pittsburg State University
