CHOICE Review

The title of this volume is somewhat misleading; it is a compilation of papers presented at an institute of the same name sponsored by the American Association of Law Libraries for its members. It is intended as a self-teaching guide for those who could not attend. Because the institute was held in July 1993, many of the papers are dated, especially those focusing primarily on electronic resources. The titles of the papers focus almost entirely on the UN, the European Community, and the Council of Europe. They actually contain information on a larger number of organizations, but that is difficult to know since there is no index. This omission also makes the book nearly unusable as a reference tool. Still, the papers were written by some of the best-known names in the field and contain a great deal of useful information. Particularly interesting are an overview of UN research tools (Harms) and two papers focusing on hidden strengths of materials probably already in most collections (Fetzer, Reynolds); many of the others will also prove of interest to law librarians, international documents librarians, researchers, and others working with collections of international documents. It does not replace International Information, ed. by Peter I. Hajnal (CH, Nov'88), as the basic primer in this field. Recommended for specialized collections. C. Teague Michigan State University
