Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The virtues of tolerance seem absolutely unassailable, at first glance. Yet qualified behavioural tolerance seems to have been replaced by a blank-cheque attitudinal tolerance which threatens individual liberty and stifles free speech. This argument is at the centre of this compelling book. Robert Weissberg takes a serious look at the political shifts over the past 30 years and their effect on attitudes and behaviour. What should be tolerated? Is being highly tolerant a praiseworthy virtue? Is the welcoming of differences too often merely a facade to avoid the charge of intolerance?

CHOICE Review

Weissberg (Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) writes a polemic against a growing cultural relativism that is destructive of quality community discourse on critical societal issues. He is concerned that these issues are not being addressed for fear of a dogma that advocates acceptance of everyone and everything. The author contends that he is unfairly criticized for arguing that racism, sexism, and homophobia are not "hot" issues and that he has been silenced by a moral police attitude. Weissberg feels that if he wants to deny, for example, tolerance for the practice of open homosexuality (or deny that racism and sexism are societal problems), he should be able to so do, but he maintains that the current definition of democracy does not allow this position without accusations of political intolerance. This frankly polemical treatise can be profitably juxtaposed with books such as Derrick Bell's Faces at the Bottom of the Well (CH, Feb.'93) and any of the works by Bell Hooks. Useful for upper-division or graduate collections in politics and sociology. P. Barton-Kriese; Indiana University East
