CHOICE Review

This collection of articles on gender issues at work, written by academics from the field of sociology, is diverse, including studies on compensation, authority, career processes, and occupational segregation. Many insights on the measurement, status, and explanations of male/female inequality are provided. Each contribution presents a well-researched, -written, and -referenced study. The sociological approach is paramount. Material from economics, particularly the human capital approach, is often discussed and debated, and management literature is cited. Introductory and concluding chapters help tie the material together, but each study is independent. Several chapters address occupational/job segregation and resegregation. Specific studies on managers, television writers, sociology professors, and computer workers are included, as is a chapter on sex segregation internationally. The influence of social forces on outcomes is stressed. Evidence that the gender gap is closing is presented; however, the authors do not foresee equality soon. A good volume for researchers in the field. Graduate; faculty.
