CHOICE Review

Elegant in style, impressive in documentation, balanced in coverage, this book is probably the best single-volume study of Cuban history available. Providing a marvelous synthesis of the latest and best scholarship, Perez begins with a solid examination of the physical geography and early, prehispanic history of Cuba. He then describes the early colonial era, carefully analyzes the sugar revolutions at the end of the 18th century; examines the political, military, and economic conflicts of the later 19th century; and richly details the sordid politics of the republican period between 1902 and 1958. The final two chapters deal extensively with the Castro revolution. The author applauds the achievements of the revolution, but points out that many problems remain unresolved, and many new inequities have surfaced in the later years. The maps and tables are excellent. The selected, annotated bibliography runs for 93 pages. Altogether a highly recommneded addition to any library. F. W. Knight Johns Hopkins University
