This is a book about preschoolers_three and four-year-old children_and libraries. Even though the major focus of the book is on service in public libraries, librarians and media specialists who work in schools with preschoolers should find much of what is said useful. The author presents a compilation of salient developmental characteristics of three- and four-year-old children, followed by implications for library programs drawn from these characteristics. Its purpose is to help eliminate some of the trial and error librarians resort to when searching for an appropriate match between the child and the library program.

Carlson's title is quite precise. This is a book about three- and four-year-olds and the library experience. The beginning chapters are historical, describing how library service for preschoolers evolved. Carlson goes on to discuss the whys and wherefores of sharing books with children, culminating in her "schema," which presents a compilation of characteristics of the age group and how various library programs can be based on children's developmental skills. Carlson also discusses the necessity for developing programs for parents and other interested adults. A fine addition to professional shelves, this has something for those just starting out in children's work as well as for librarians looking for new ideas or more sophisticated methodology.
