The new version of this manual is a handbook on online services, networking and other issues relating to cyberspace. Readers will find an edition that is almost entirely new, with the most current information noted. And, the scope of the book is broader, discussing some of the social and management issues that have surfaced with the increasing use of technology and Web access in the library.

Booklist Review

This broadened version of a 1997 original attempts to provide up-to-date information in new articles as well as information that could be considered timeless. Among the topics covered are networks and the Internet; markup languages for the Web; how to customize one's setup for multimedia presentations; metadata and other identifiers for Web documents; collecting electronic resources, including e-journals; and virtual reality. One section provides "cybrarians" with the knowledge needed to avoid being trapped by the "technology of the month." The final section considers lighter sides of the overall topic in such papers as a study of Rupert Giles, the librarian in TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and another on that library-lit perennial, how to deal with negative stereotypes of librarians.
