CHOICE Review

The role of the arts, and to a lesser extent the humanities, in American schooling always has been contested. The essays collected here suggest that the arts and humanities are necessary for "constructing" a postmodern schooling. The "postmodern" concerns of the 12 contributors could equally be called "multicultural" or "democratic empowerment and participation." Some of the essays appear to be more complaints about modern life than revelations about "placing the arts and humanities at the instructional core of general education." An early essay warns against contradictions and consequences of postmodernism, but other essayists do not follow the caution. They treat postmodernism as opposed to science, industry, and rationalism and call for an education that emphasizes spirituality, morality, intuition, edification, and the like. John Dewey figures prominently in several of the essays, but he would be dismayed by these dichotomies. A case still needs to be made for how the arts and the humanities are "basic" to education and how they contribute to, rather than deny, American values. Upper-division undergraduates and above. R.
