Debunking the notion that an invariant sequence of stages of grief occurs among all who experience the death of a loved one, this groundbreaking volume clearly demonstrates that highly individual processes of meaning-making are at the heart of grief dynamics. Leading the reader through earlier conceptions of grief and mourning in which successful grieving is viewed as withdrawal of psychic energy from the deceased, the healthy role of continued symbolic bonds is stressed as well as appreciation of life-enhancing growth as one integrates the lessons of loss.

CHOICE Review

On the first page of this book the reader meets a seven year old whose father's traumatic death catapults his world and family into chaos. One wonders how to help this family survive and grow as death's shadow has disrupted their rituals, meaning, and assumptions. The traditional, intrapsychic paradigm of grief--which dictates "let go" or separate and disconnect from the deceased, re-engage in living, and complete the phases of grief--seems inadequate because it lacks empirical support and the invariant stages of grief ignore individual or cultural differences. Neimeyer (Univ. of Memphis) rethinks these concepts and posits a new bereavement paradigm: mourning becomes a transformative, social, and relational process and the therapist plays an active and central role in facilitating mourning. Neimeyer emphasizes making meaning, establishing continuity, integrating the memory of the deceased into a new organization of the self, and exploring the positive and negative aspects of grief. Including a review of the scholarly research as well as narratives, this well-written book is divided into five sections: "A fresh theory," "Re-establishing relationships," "Transcending trauma," "Healing stories," and "Renegotiating the world." Essential reading for undergraduates, scholars, philosophers, and educators, the book provides a foundation for more empathetic and facilitative bereavement therapy. S. M.
