Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Drawing from over 150 interviews with teens, psychologist Ritch Savin-Williams seeks to separate fact from fiction in this survey of coming-out experiences. He illustrates the range of family reactions and the factors that determine how parents come to terms with the disclosure over time.

CHOICE Review

Revealing the complex dynamics of how families deal with coming out, Savin-Williams (Cornell) makes a significant contribution to the burgeoning literature on the coming-out process for sexual minorities. The author focuses on how sexual-minority youths negotiate the issues of disclosing their sexual identity to their parents, basing his discussion on his own research with a sample of young women and men drawn from several colleges. He dispels the popular view that gay, lesbian, and bisexual youths are prone to be victimized by negative reactions from their parents, and he demonstrates the vast diversity of life experiences that sexual-minority youths have with their families. Especially interesting are the personal stories of the young women and men whom the author quotes liberally throughout. The author provides guidelines for both children and parents on the key issues of coming out, using his research and empirical and popular literature to support his suggestions. This book primarily targets youth and their families directly involved with these issues; it will be useful in academic collections in the social sciences and to practitioners dealing with sexual-minority issues. All collections. H. L. Minton formerly, University of Windsor
