Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Covering the history of the civil rights movement since World War II, this text focuses on the development of black electoral politics from Southern disenfranchisement to the election of big city mayors. The author ties together the broader effort to achieve the legal right to equality with his specific aims of achieving actual political equality. He links the national struggle for civil and political rights with grassroots efforts where much of the inspiration and resources for the movement were derived. It provides an opportunity to explain the powerful institutions of government - presidents, Congress, the Supreme Court, and the actions of ordinary citizens in the local communities.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

Author of two well-received books on the black civil rights movement and of various articles on the same topic, Lawson is very qualified to prepare this historical overview of the civil rights movement over the past half century. Perhaps because of his background in history the author presents his discussion in a roughly chronological order, beginning with the impact of WW II on black civil rights and concluding with the current state of the movement in the US today. The book contains an unusually fine bibliographic essay and an average quality index. May be compared with Stephen L. Longenecker's Selma's Peacemaker (CH, May'88) and with Implementation of Civil Rights Policy, ed. by Charles S. Bullock III and Charles M. Lamb (CH, Jan'84). -R. A. Carp, University of Houston
