Some things about babies, happily, will never change. They still arrive warm, cuddly, soft, and smelling impossibly sweet. But how moms and dads care for their brand-new bundles of baby joy has changed--and now, so has the new-baby bible.
Announcing the completely revised third edition of What to Expect the First Year . With over 10.5 million copies in print, First Year is the world's best-selling, best-loved guide to the instructions that babies don't come with, but should. And now, it's better than ever. Every parent's must-have/go-to is completely updated.
Keeping the trademark month-by-month format that allows parents to take the potentially overwhelming first year one step at a time, First Year is easier-to-read, faster-to-flip-through, and new-family-friendlier than ever--packed with even more practical tips, realistic advice, and relatable, accessible information than before. Illustrations are new, too.
Among the changes: Baby care fundamentals--crib and sleep safety, feeding, vitamin supplements--are revised to reflect the most recent guidelines. Breastfeeding gets more coverage, too, from getting started to keeping it going. Hot-button topics and trends are tackled: attachment parenting, sleep training, early potty learning (elimination communication), baby-led weaning, and green parenting (from cloth diapers to non-toxic furniture). An all-new chapter on buying for baby helps parents navigate through today's dizzying gamut of baby products, nursery items, and gear. Also new: tips on preparing homemade baby food, the latest recommendations on starting solids, research on the impact of screen time (TVs, tablets, apps, computers), and "For Parents" boxes that focus on mom's and dad's needs. Throughout, topics are organized more intuitively than ever, for the best user experience possible.

Library Journal Review
A dozen complimentary adjectives could be used to describe this book, but as it is sweet with choice information that is easy to digest, served in small helpings, and very satisfying, it can best be summed up as crackerjack! With an insightful narrative punctuated by the familiar question-and-answer format, the authors of What To Expect When Your Expecting (Workman, 1984) admirably address every conceivable aspect of baby care during the first year. The balanced presentation is amazingly comprehensive; the lack of preaching is refreshing. The month-by-month summaries of development, feedings, medical checkups, and special concerns are outstanding. This is by far one of the best baby care books on the market, and for the price, no library should be without a copy.-- Kimberly E. Megginson, VA Medical Ctr. Lib., Fayetteville, Ark. Parents-to-be are likely to find themselves quickly immersed in this highly authoritative manual by the collaborators of What to Expect When You're Expecting . Nearly 700 pages of snappily written, friendly advice, constructed in the form of chatty answers to hypothetical questions, are arranged on a month-by-month basis. For each of 12 months, there are a guide to the progress the baby may be expected to be making at this stage, a list of potential health or other problems and paragraphs on the myriad questions all new parents ask--on subjects as various as in-home care, birthmarks, circumcision and breath-holding. Other sections cover what to buy for a new-born, first aid, recipes, adoption and even how to enjoy the first year, in terms of the parents' own activities, such as social life and sex. An extensive index leads the reader to information that wouldn't normally be accessed using the month-to-month arrangement--and also serves as an indication of the book's all-inclusiveness. This treasury of advice for new or expectant parents is encyclopedic in scope, reasonable in tone, and full of humor and practical hints. The first chapter discusses breast versus bottle feeding, answers questions on matters such as naming the baby, and offers suggestions on selecting the right physician. Further chapters cogently summarize current thought and practice regarding child development, first aid, adoption, the father's role, etc. A final section of ready-reference material includes recipes, common home remedies, a well-organized table of common illnesses, and height and weight charts. Empathetic and exhaustive in its coverage, this volume may well become many a new parent's best friend during a period of enormous adjustment. Arlene Eisenberg, 1934-2001 Arlene Eisenberg was born June 8, 1934 in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, daughter to the Head of the Sanitation Department. She is best known for her instructional books on pregnancy and the early years of childhood, "What to Expect When You're Expecting", as well as the"What to Expect Foundation", an organization which prints lower literacy manuals for disadvantaged women. At the tender age of 18 she dropped out of Queens College, opting for babies and marriage to Howard Eisenberg, a press agent for Eddie Fisher, instead of a higher education. The two wrote articles together for many magazines until their children were grown.
At this point, Eisenberg began to collaborate on question and answer type pregnancy books with her adult daughters. Together, the three women wrote "What to Expect When You're Expecting", the follow ups "What to Expect the First Year", "What to Expect the Toddler Years" and "What to Eat when You're Expecting", which were hungrily sought out by pregnant women. It was a series that answered all serious and silly questions and made an expectant mother all the more comfortable. Through these books, Eisenberg became a mother to the multitudes, explaining to all women that they didn't have to be perfect mothers.
Arlene Eisenberg died at the age of 66 of breast cancer.
