CHOICE Review

The first group of papers reviews the historical and social roots of education research, while papers in three other groups examine the state of the field. Because education research borrows from many different academic disciplines, it serves the needs of practitioners, policy makers, and theory builders and is impacted by both increasing complexity and globalization. Later papers discuss difficulties in organizing and communicating education research, and in preparing new practitioners. Alan Schoenfeld's paper, "Education Research as a Vocation," points to the seemingly insurmountable problem of preparing researchers for work in an area that is fractured, diverse, immense, and always changing. What emerges in the end is not an integrated view of the state of this field, but a prismatic view. Fortunately hypermedia provides tools and patterns for handling such a view. Education research has to satisfy many often disparate demands. The contributors propose that education researchers employ multiple perspectives for inquiry, practice, discourse, and exchange. Perhaps at the metalevel, multiple perspectives also need to be employed when examining the field of education research, and this volume will certainly help in that effort. Graduate students and researchers. G. H. Alexander; Florida Gulf Coast University
