CHOICE Review

LeVine (Univ. of Kentucky) has significantly updated his first edition (1999) with additions that enhance the book's utility as a reference source. This volume is a thorough, efficiently packaged overview of the complicated, rapidly changing field of genetic engineering. New chapters are titled "Problems, Controversies, and Solutions" and "Worldwide Perspective." An expanded introductory overview provides fuller discussions of cloning, gene-mapping technologies, and bioinformatics. References for all chapters are updated, citing publications since 1999. The chronology and brief biographical profiles also show evidence of revision. For example, the chronology includes genome-mapping milestones such as the announcement in 2000 of initial sequencing of the human genome. Dates of death have been added for two people in the biographical section, and many additional tables appear in the collected statistics on facts and opinion. The author wisely emphasizes background material, as listings of print, nonprint, Internet, and organizational resources tend to become quickly dated, and readers can rely on the Web to help them locate current, relevant supplementary materials. A few inoperable links appear in this volume's Internet source list. A thorough table of contents, complete indexing, and a useful glossary add value. This excellent resource is appropriate for readers ranging from high school students to businesspeople and policy makers seeking an introduction to scientific, business, industrial, and ethical aspects of genetic engineering. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
