In today's knowledge-based global economy, continuous learning has become essential to ensuring a productive, competitive workforce. Confronted with both a growing demand for postbaccalaureate learning opportunities and increased competition, higher education institutions are developing new strategies. Institutions are pooling their resources, adopting new technologies, developing modularized curricula, focusing on quality assurance, and creating new credentials. Postbaccalaureate Futures explores the nature of the demand for postbaccalaureate learning and how this demand is influencing higher education generally--its financing, quality assurance, use of technology in teaching and learning, and public perceptions of the academy.

Includes bibliographies and index.

Library Journal Review

Those seeking to evaluate the current state of higher education and the challenges it faces will find much for deliberation here. This book emerged from long-term conversations among members of the Council of Graduate Schools and the University Continuing Education Association, who offer multiple perspectives on how different institutions will respond to the demand by working adults for more learning opportunities. LaPidus, president of the Council of Graduate Schools, and Kohl, executive director of the University Continuing Education Association, have organized the book into four sections, probing a variety of questions in each, e.g., how should higher education respond to expanding demands? How will private sector competition provide challenges to universities? And how will the learner-centered paradigm affect faculty? The text looks at emerging markets for postbaccalaureate education, explores innovative methods for using technology in education, and offers insights into creating and credentialing new postbaccalaureate programs. Essential for libraries serving schools of education, this book will appeal to a wide audience of higher education officials.DLeroy Hommerding, Fort Myers P.L., FL (c) Copyright 2010.
