CHOICE Review

Eisaguirre, a lawyer, presents a brief overview of the history of affirmative action from the first executive order to current case law. What distinguishes this handbook from others is its evenhanded treatment of the topic. The author successfully presents both anti- and pro-affirmative action perspectives. The volume begins with an introduction to affirmative action, which includes multiple definitions of the subject, then moves to a chronology of important events and biographical sketches of affirmative action notables. Next comes an invaluable overview of factual evidence and statistical analyses of affirmative action programs. Since perspectives supportive and critical of such programs are presented, readers are left to draw their own conclusions about the success or failure of these endeavors. Unlike many works on this topic, Eisaguirre is careful to include information not only on Hispanic, African American, and female subgroups but also on Asian American/Native Pacific Islanders and American Indians. The handbook ends with a comprehensive listing of organizations and print and nonprint resources that pertain to affirmative action. Recommended for lower and upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, researchers/faculty, and professionals. K. J. Powers; Willamette University
