The first two volumes of this handbook contain entries for 27,500 compounds arranged in numerical order by their Chemical Abstracts registry numbers. For each substance, the standard name, molecular weight, and usually a drawing of the molecular structure are given, followed by a list of one to 50 synonyms. Though not absolutely comprehensive, the selections are well chosen and include standard trade names. The third volume contains indexes by molecular formula and by names and synonyms. Although it will always be necessary to consult the index rather than go directly to the entry, this is a sufficiently obvious process and should cause no difficulty. The work is similar to Dictionary of Common Names = Trivialnamen-Handbuch (1993), which has better drawings and includes key references, though it has slightly fewer compounds. Both are luxuries. The much less expensive Gardner's Chemical Synonyms and Trade Names (10th ed., 1994), or P.H. Howard and M. Neal's Dictionary of Chemical Names and Synonyms (1992), will fill nonspecialist needs and supplement the extensive synonym data in the much more comprehensive Dictionary of Organic Compounds (5th ed., London, 1982), which is a basic resource in any chemical research library.
