**** A standard reference since 1938, cited in BCL3 and Sheehy. The present edition sports a new subtitle to reflect the changing emphases of the information world. It also improves coverage in fields where previous editions were less than adequate, including archive work, records management, conservation and preservation, networking and computer terminology, and gives greater depth to the international perspective by inviting contributions from the US, Australia, and Japan. CHOICE Review

Published since 1938, this version of Harrod's Librarians' Glossary provides, as its enriched title suggests, more coverage of archives management, records management, networking, preservation, conservation, and computer technology than the 7th edition (1990). This edition also extends coverage geographically to Japan, Australia, and the US. Despite these extensions of coverage, biases favoring traditional areas of librarianship (especially technical services) and the book arts as well as an obvious focus on Commonwealth and European nations remain. No statement of editorial policy provides reasons for including or excluding categories of terms nor why some terms are given more extensive coverage than others. For example, the increasingly complex issues of intellectual property make 12 words seem inadequate, while a full page is provided for "Library Association." Some terms are quite arcane (e.g., "red edges," "Cuir Bouilli"). Extensive treatment, with see references, is given initialisms and acronyms, yet there is little connection among obviously related terms. On an infrequent basis, citations to recent books or articles are provided. This edition does offer much better coverage than the dated ALA Glossary of Library and Information Science (1983). Important for collections supporting programs in the information disciplines. J. M. Pemberton; University of Tennessee at Knoxville
