Booklist Review
It is difficult to find any area of travel or away-from-home recreational activity for older adults (usually those over 50) that is not fully covered in this remarkably handy volume. Part of Choices and Challenges: An Older Adult Reference series, this book lives up to the reputation of others in the series. Printed in moderately large type, it presents information that older adults--perhaps out to enjoy a small inheritance, or take that long-delayed vacation--would wish to know about both domestic and foreign travel, by land, sea, or air. The first half of the book is in narrative form and covers such topics as package tours, group tours, traveling alone, travel agencies, medical assistance, insurance, immunizations, and help for the disabled. There are also sections on RV travel, campgrounds, discounts, etc. One chapter deals with cruises, the large ocean-going style, as well as river barges and freighters. Another discusses adventure and special-interest travel, such as farm and ranch holidays, river rafting, ballooning, and genealogy. The second half of the book lists resources to further research these topics. A long chapter lists such organizations as the AARP and Elderhostel as well as special services, like mail forwarding and home exchanges, with addresses and telephone numbers. The final chapters list books, about 50 periodicals, pamphlets, video and audiotapes, and computer databases, with annotations for each. Materials listed include the Frommer guides, handbooks for single-women travelers, and books on staying healthy while traveling. The chapter on video and audiotapes does not list individual titles but gives sources for tapes. Much of the information in this section will be useful to travelers of any age. The book ends with a short glossary of terms used in the travel trade, which may be unfamiliar to the stay-at-home, such as drop charge, single supplement, or voucher. Finally there is a good index of names of organizations, topics, and titles and authors of books cited in the text. According to AARP statistics, older Americans constitute about 35 percent of all package-tour travel. This book is the perfect answer to the question asked in public libraries, "Do you have any handbooks on travel?" (Reviewed Sept. 1, 1991)
