These nine titles discuss both individual drugs and drugs in society to present teens with solid information so that they can make smart choices. The statistics are shocking. One person dies every half hour and one is injured every minute in impaired driving accidents. Several thousand teens die every year in these accidents. In this important book, Grosshandler offers lifesaving advice to teens who are struggling with both the strain of peer pressure and the dangers of living with friends and family who drive under the influence. Most important, she explains what happens to your body while drinking or taking drugs to make it impossible to drive safely while under the influence. Copyright © Libri GmbH. All rights reserved.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-8-- In Driving , stories about teen accidents and statistics illustrate the importance of drug-free driving in personal terms. Brief descriptions of substances are followed by examples of how they impair ability and the legal consequences of using them. The volume contains the same information as Drinking and Driving (Crestwood, 1990) by Andy Hjelmeland, but is easier to read. Sports discusses drug addiction and steroid use, with both fictional and real athletes as examples. It doesn't cover testing and the legal aspects found in Drugs, Steroids and Sports (Watts, 1988) by Janet Mohun. Both titles have phone numbers of helpful organizations; the large print and full-color and black-and-white photographs combine to make an attractive package. There's nothing new here, but the easy reading level and respectful tone that's appropriate for a hi/lo audience might make these good choices for elementary and middle school libraries. --Martha Gordon, South Salem Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 7-10. Both of these books are part of the Drug Abuse Prevention Library, a high/low series directed to reluctant readers. They are attractive, slim volumes with simple formats and writing styles as well as colorful illustrations. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of victims, only tame representations of beautiful people who don't seem to have a problem. Peck's text is an appropriate way of alerting young people to the choice between a constantly improving physiology and a constantly deteriorating body/mind. Grosshandler's book has some stronger photos, but the graphics don't work as well as they could or should. Nevertheless, both authors provide good information, clear definitions and descriptions, and referral information. Athletes should know the real facts about steroids, and new drivers should know why their insurance rates are so high. The two additional titles listed in the Series Roundup of this issue contain more realistic illustrations. ~--Gary Young
