School Library Journal Review
Gr 4-8-- Edwards presents a general overview of street drugs, discussing their affects on the body, treatment of addicts, and strategies to avoid involvement. Smith's book focuses particu-larly on heroin. Posed black-and-white and full-color photographs depict miserable drug users and happy young people engaged in acceptable activities. The texts are sometimes choppy and often preachy. The material is, for the most part, correct but may not tell the whole story; in discussing methadone treatment, both books refer to it as another addictive drug without explaining why it is used. Edwards states that ``AIDS is now the leading cause of death among heroin addicts.'' Smith says ``Heroin is more damaging to mental health than to physical health.'' The format of these books is more attractive than the ``Understanding Drugs'' series (Watts), written on the same reading level, and they explain the physical side in more detail than Margaret O. Hyde's anecdotal Know about Drugs (Walker, 1990). --Martha Gordon, South Salem Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
