Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

A comprehensive reference for students and general readers, covering the main developments worldwide over about 7,000 years of human history. In addition to approximately 5,000 text entries, the volume includes some 70 historical maps, 100 thematic chronologies, quotations about or by historical figures, and histories of all countries. A comprehensive chronology of world history provides an overarching context, while featured articles address themes such as "The French Revolution," "The Age of Discovery," and "Gandhi and Indian Nationalism." Library Journal Review

The stated goal of this reference tool is to provide ``as great a coverage as possible of global events from earliest times to the present day within a single volume.'' Such an undertaking is clearly a formidable one and, by definition, cannot be totally comprehensive. Indeed, the user should keep in mind what appears to be a Eurocentric and classical bias. The French and Indian War is merely a cross reference to the Seven Years' War; there is no cross reference at all from Queen Anne's War to the War of Spanish Succession and no mention of Florida's Seminole Wars. The ancient Greek city of Thebes is included but not ancient Egypt's capitals, Thebes and Memphis. Yet for the general reader, this project, compiled by 20 editors and consultants, succeeds. Comparable historical dictionaries are all limited in scope by geographical area or time period. Alphabetically arranged entries here include cities, countries, major civilizations, events, and historical and religious figures, with cross references provided. There are eight topical appendixes and an extensive ``world chronology,'' and clearly presented maps enrich the entries. The work is highly recommended for all reference collections.-- Edward K. CHOICE Review

Any attempt to produce a dictionary or encyclopedia of high quality that treats world history is a daunting task. Can one imagine a broader range of knowledge to organize, summarize, present? These editors have nevertheless realized success. Unexpected depth of coverage is shown by the inclusion of entries for topics of lesser significance--colonial governors, social reformers, small countries no longer in existence, etc.--along with the expected entries for wars, emperors, and countries. International and chronological coverage is balanced. Finally, the currentness of reporting will be very useful in libraries; important historical events through 1992 are incorporated. These factors alone would make the work a valuable source for most libraries. However, the contributors also offer longer analytical articles for many issues of significance, illuminating quotations from major historical sources, and interesting special features such as chronologies, thematic maps, rankings, etc. All this frosting is left out of many dictionaries. A valuable addition to reference collections. T. L. Wesley; Northern Kentucky University
