Library Journal Review
Part history, part encyclopedia, this is an excellent volume for the nonspecialist, with brief entries appropriate for school and public libraries. It spans American environmental awareness from early naturalists such as Audubon up through current legislation, and follows the format of previous titles in the ABC-CLIO series "Companions to Key Issues in American History and Life." While Gale's Environmental Encyclopedia (LJ 6/1/94) is vast in scope, this volume is more digestible, with quotations, chronology, bibliography, and index. Many of the entries are biographies, covering everyone from Smoky Bear to Bruce Babbit. Concise definitions are given for terms such as "acid rain," "biodiversity," and "endangered species." The level is just right for elementary and high schools and for public libraries that did not buy the work by Gale.Laura Lipton, Miller Horticulture Lib., Seattle (c) Copyright 2010. In more than 400 entries, this handy work concentrates on a part of the environmental movement that is often short-changed--its history. Well-researched, clearly written entries on major and minor environmentalists, environmental organizations (old and new), important court cases, and acts of Congress make up the bulk of the volume. Early naturalists, geologists, and other scientists are well covered. The Interior Department is profiled in depth, with biographies of all secretaries, and other governmental agencies and their leaders, such as the Forest Service and Geological Survey, are included. There is a detailed historical chronology, a 20-page bibliography, and about 70 illustrations (many of them historical portraits) scattered throughout the work. The extensive index is helpful and needed, since cross-referencing at the ends of articles can be spotty--sometimes complete, sometimes partially or totally lacking (e.g., the Interior Department article contains many names but no cross-references). Short summaries of major controversies, Hetch-Hetchy to Exxon Valdez, enhance the coverage. Recommended for public libraries and academic libraries that support environmental programs. M. S.
