School Library Journal Review

Gr 6-8-- The existence of 60 projects in 10 countries demonstrates the seriousness with which some scientists take the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). After detailing the physical conditions and elements necessary for carbon-based life, Rasmussen describes some of these efforts, from Schiaparelli's reports of Martian ``canali'' to NASA's SETI Microwave Observing Project, scheduled to get underway in the near future. He repeats some speculations about the assumed appearance of extraterrestrials, describes the protocols that have been worked out when (if) a signal is received, and allows some experts who think the whole thing is a waste of time to have their say. Among the reference tools are lists of organizations and suggested reading; black-and-white illustrations are small, muddy, and not always relevant. Still, this is a useful update to Aylesworth's Who's Out There? (McGraw-Hill, 1975; o.p.) and Moche's Search for Life Beyond Earth (Watts, 1978; o.p.). --John Peters, New York Public Library (c) Copyright 2010.
