CHOICE Review

Ball (Centre for Educational Studies, King's College, London) edits an engaging exploration of the work of French intellectual, Michel Foucault. Ten of Ball's colleagues from universities in England, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand analyze Foucault's work in a series of essays that examine education and its interrelationship with politics, economics, and history in the formation and constitution of human beings. Michel Foucault, a prolific writer, has served as a catalyst to many disciplines. He argued that meanings arise not from language but from institutional practices and from power relations. Education, as the new role for intellectuals and knowledge experts after 1800, as the society that establishes and grants credentials as the primary institutional experience of virtually all young persons, is fundamental to a Foucauldian analysis of modern society. This collection incorporates perspectives from educational research, history, and politics. Students of educational theory, history, the social sciences and others interested in Foucault will find this book an important contribution to the study and analysis of power relations. Upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, and general readers. J. C. Baxter Northeastern Illinois University
