CHOICE Review

This small volume is more than a traditional dictionary. It can serve as a handbook because it covers popular software packages, programming languages, descriptions of electronic components, logic circuits, as well as mainstream computer topics related to hardware, software, operating systems, history of computing, and personal computers. Many entries are illustrated with synonyms noted. Many graphics provide supporting information. The volume is small and compact and a very current and very useful basic reference tool. For more comprehensive discussions on a particular subject, one should consult Encyclopedia of Computer Science and Engineering, ed. by A. Ralston and E.D. Reilly (CH, Apr '83) or the wider coverage found in C.J. and C.P. Sippl's Computer Dictionary (4th ed., 1985; 2nd ed., CH. Apr '73), or R.A. Edmunds's Prentice-Hall Standard Glossary of Computer Terminology (1984). The book under review may be most appropriate as a personal copy rather than as a library acquisition.-J.
