CHOICE Review

London and Mone, career development specialists at AT&T, have written what is essentially a manual for practitioners and students of personnel guidance. On the one hand, it is a heroically ambitious work aimed at keeping salaried personnel motivated and happy while their jobs are threatened by cuts in the workforce. On the other hand, the book is intended to instruct personnel staff on the practical and worthwhile activity of assisting individuals with career decisions. Specifically, the chapters cover how career decisions are made, how to analyze personal assets and liabilities, how the organization can develop ``helpful'' settings to reduce career stress, and strategies for dealing with career stress. The practicing specialist, or would-be specialist, will find this a useful, highly readable, and thoughtful work. It is excellent within the genre of career guidance.
