Booklist Review

Despite its lack of documentation, this is a responsible and informative examination of a subject insufficiently explored in most teenage materials on pregnancy. As background to the ensuing discussion of drugs, science/medicine correspondent Young summarizes the fertilization process, providing an excellent description of the role played by the placenta in fetal development. He investigates the adverse effects of cigarettes and alcohol in the greatest detail, following up with information on the potential hazards associated with the use of a variety of illegal substances, some familiar types of over-the-counter preparations, and prescription medicines. Closing sections consider the dangers of drugs to the nursing infant and deal with some of the tragic problems facing babies who are born addicted. While never shrill, Young's pleas for caution, abstinence, and the need for professional advice when drugs are used during pregnancy cannot be missed. Black-and-white photographs illustrate the text, and a glossary, a list of further readings, and an index are appended. Gr. 9-12.
