School Library Journal Review

Gr 6-8‘A fun-to-read, informational book with some anecdotal surprises. It contains a lot more about the subject than do most other books about cowboys, although it's certainly not a substitute for Russell Freedman's Cowboys of the Wild West (Clarion, 1985). But it does have some drawbacks. Much good material is overprinted on fairly dark backgrounds, information can be difficult to locate, and some of the black-and-white photos and reproductions are so reduced in size that details are difficult to pick out. What could have been a really good book is just so-so.‘George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 6-9. This comprehensive, well-researched title in The Way People Live series explores the life of the cowboy from 1865 to 1890. After a brief historical overview, the book continues with detailed descriptions of a cowboy's life, personal and professional, and of how he spoke, what he ate, and what he wore. There is also a look at a typical cow town, dance-hall girls and all. Stewart's vivid portrayal of cowboys (both black and white) will help negate the many traditional, Hollywood stereotypes. Throughout the text, personal reflections are highlighted on blocks of gray. A variety of footnoted quotes and a large assortment of black-and-white photographs and illustrations complement the text, though they do clutter the design. Occasionally, profane phrases are used, but they are appropriate in the context of the work and not simply added for effect. The book concludes with notes and bibliographies. --April Judge
