School Library Journal Review

Gr 7-10-- A sweeping overview of the vast topic of excellence and its attainment. Wilson focuses on such basic points as self-confidence, integrity, respect for others, and persistence. She defines her terms, includes recognized standards, looks at interpersonal relationships, and examines major group structures such as schools, communities, business, and government. ``Pacesetters of Excellence'' briefly highlights both real and fictional individuals--Aristotle, Anna Pavlova, Florence Griffith-Joyner, poet Robert Allen, To Kill a Mockingbird 's Atticus Finch, and Seventeenth Summer's Angie--stressing the personality traits that contributed to their pursuit of excellence. She provides ample opportunities and tools for readers' interaction through frequent, nonintrusive question inventories that facilitate and prompt self-analysis at crucial points in the text. The writing is clear and straightforward with numerous black-and-white photos that elucidate or emphasize the narrative. The appended bibliography features items found in adult, young adult, and sometimes juvenile collections with titles varying in both content and complexity. --Celia A.
