Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. This unflattering biography of Marcos points up the scandal and corruption that characterized the Philippine leader's career from its very beginning. For example, although he was a brilliant student, Marcos' schooling was sidetracked by charges that he had murdered a political opponent of his father's; later he was convicted of the crime, but appealed his case and was declared innocent. Slack also tells of Marcos' phony war medals and about the downward plunge of the Philippine economy during his tenure as president. There is also information on the massive plundering by Marcos of his country's wealth (at the time of his downfall, he was worth an estimated $10 billion). The author was a freelance reporter in the Philippines during the period that Marcos was forced out by Aquino. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. No source notes, but list of further reading is appended. DMW.
