This timely volume provides accurate, up-to-date information on all phases of domestic violence, from root causes to prevention and education.
Domestic violence is put in historical context as a pervasive problem in most societies. The aspects discussed in Domestic Violence include myths and statistics, effects of domestic violence on children, important legal cases and court actions, programs for victims and abusers, and a state-by-state directory of leading agencies and organizations.
The book deals primarily with the issue of male violence against women, though it also contains information on same-sex battering, elder abuse, abuse of the disabled, and abuse of men by women. This work is an indispensable reference work for students, teachers, shelter staffs, and legislators, as well as social workers and mental health professionals.

Gr 7 UpA broad and in-depth view of spousal abuse, particularly the abuse of women by men with whom they have or have had an intimate relationship. Reactions to the problem are discussed, including the responses of men, women, the community, and sociologists. A chronology of events, laws, and legislation provides a historical context within which domestic violence can be understood, while a section of biographical sketches features individuals who have been influential in securing rights for women. Another section on facts, statistics, and legal issues includes data on what is known about the extent and seriousness of the issue. Men as victims and violence in same-sex relationships are also discussed. Interviews with survivors of violence and vignettes illustrate points about the nature of domestic violence and provide a sobering picture of the problem. Sections on national organizations and references (books, articles, curricular materials, video, and film) include annotations and enable readers to access additional information. The comprehensive index provides easy access to the text. The organization, writing style, and format (wide margins, easy-to-read print, bold headings within chapters) make this informative book accessible to high school students.Dana McDougald, Cedar Shoals High School, Athens, GA (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review
Although violence against women and the desire to end it is not a new concern, the modern battered women's movement began in 1971 in England and quickly spread to the US by way of the feminist movement. This relatively inexpensive volume is a cornucopia of information on this "hot topic" and complements other books in the "Contemporary World Issues" series, although the emphasis here lies clearly on the US. The volume includes definitions of domestic violence, the types and causes of such abuse, a chronology showing the dilemma is not new and the path toward domestic tranquillity has not been straight, short biographical sketches of post-Revolutionary War persons involved in the struggle for and against equal gender rights, a lengthy section of facts, statistics and legal issues involved in domestic violence, an annotated list of national and state organizations, and a long list of books, articles, newsletters, professional publications, and nonprint resources. Information is factual and concise, but there are a few errors in dates; e.g., Susan B. Anthony is said to have attended the 1948 Women's Rights Convention. Community college, public, and college and university libraries will want this book because it provides a quick source of current, concise data; the bibliographies lead to more specific aspects of the subject.
