School Library Journal Review

YA-- A nontechnical account of the creation, handling, and disposal of radioactive materials and wastes. The book is biased against nuclear power; although it includes numerous references, it is not a source from which decisions should be made. At best, it is a good starting point for readers who want to research the growth of the nuclear energy industry and the many pitfalls associated with it. (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

This work is an interesting montage of information, for it was conceived as a comprehensive, one-stop information source on radioactive materials and wastes. Introductory chapters describe the nature and characteristics of both natural and manufactured radioactive materials. Another chapter provides information on laws, regulations, and treaties about waste materials. A directory of private, governmental, and international organizations that deal with radioactive wastes is included. Other chapters include an annotated bibliography of books; a listing of periodical articles and government documents; a select list of journal titles; and a bibliography of audiovisual materials including films, filmstrips, and videocassettes. The work contains a glossary and is indexed. This will be an excellent addition to any reference collection and is recommended for all public and academic libraries, community college and on.-J. C.
