CHOICE Review

Chapters are arranged into six major sections: toxic waste and hazardous material, a perspective; chronology; laws and regulations; organization directory; bibliography of information on wastes; and audiovisual sources. The perspectives section reviews and discusses various issues (such as the uses of DDT, Agent Orange, dioxin, fire ant eradication, gypsy moth control, and world pesticide problems) and lists major US hazardous waste sites. Superfund programs and various waste control techniques are outlined. Certain very toxic chemicals are profiled, and effects of wastes on health, environment, society, and the economy are discussed. Petroleum pollution merits separate treatment as does asbestos. The chronology section misspells Seveso and Argo Merchant and omits the Mexico City petroleum fire in 1984 that killed several hundred people. Laws and regulations on wastes are discussed, but their texts are not included. Organization profiles give address, description, purpose, activities, and all suboffices and committees. The bibliography lists reference sources, books (but I.J. Selikoff's works on asbestos and M.A. Ottoboni's The Dose Makes the Poison, 1984, rev. 1991, are missing), articles, and government documents, plus a selected list of journals (but Journal of the Air Pollution Control Association has been Journal of the Air and Waste Management Association since 1987). The environmentally active American Chemical Society is omitted from the organization list, as are the International Union of Air Pollution Prevention Associations (a world leader in coordinating air pollution education) and the Air and Waste Management Association. Omissions aside, a good job of coordinating and listing the disparate sources in this important area. Suitable for high-school level and up.-J. Douville, Choice
