Library Journal Review
Providing a framework for the study of marine pollution, this new reference is organized into the categories of sewage, marine debris, toxic chemicals, heavy metals, oil and radioactive materials; their effects, monitoring, cleanup, and means of reaching the ocean are also covered. The volume includes a chronology of marine pollution incidents, biographical sketches of environmentalists and marine scientists, and a directory of organizations concerned with marine pollution worldwide. A section on legal issues lists key international marine pollution conventions, major U.S. laws covering marine pollution, data on the six categories of pollutants, and excerpts from key documents and speeches. Also featured are a list of libraries and an annotated bibliography of print resources and selected audiovisual sources. As a nontechnical introduction that brings together a great deal of otherwise disparate information, this volume will be useful in general and undergraduate collections.-- Judith B. CHOICE Review
Following the same format and principle as other titles in the "Contemporary World Issues" series, this work traces the history of marine pollution and the means by which sewage, toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and radioactive substances enter the ocean. Other chapters specific to marine pollution include a compilation of US and international laws, a chapter listing facts, tables, and statistics, a biographical section, and an annotated directory of marine related organizations. In addition, a section entitled "Selected Print Resources" offers a review of the marine pollution literature that includes annotations from government publications, books, and journals. A companion section, "Selected Nonprint Resources," includes annotated entries that describe audiocassettes, videotapes, 16mm films, computer networks, databases, television, and radio series relevant to pollution of the sea. A glossary and detailed index round out the volume. Serves well as a guide to ocean pollution sources and as a springboard for those interested in further information regarding marine pollution on the "water planet."
