Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

A splendid dictionary for the 1990s, with some 3,000 entries that provide definitions of the archaeological world's most recent terms and theories and cover techniques, sites, and conventional nomenclature as well. Biographical entries on archaeologists of the past provide a sense of the historical development of the discipline. The entries are thoroughly cross-referenced, and a number are accompanied by line drawings. The back matter includes 47 pages of maps and a list of titles for further reading arranged by topic. For a broad spectrum of the interested public. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 642-650).

CHOICE Review

The editor, author of Easter Island, Earth Island (CH, Dec'92) and other books, has compiled nearly 3,000 definitions from 16 contributors to create a well-rounded and up-to-date dictionary. Entries include short descriptions of sites, archaeological cultures and time periods, prominent dead archaeologists, important artifact types, and technical and theoretical terms. Cross-references are numerous. Omitted are most food resources, most post-medieval/historical sites, and all industrial archaeology. Coverage is worldwide, and Bahn asserts a conscious attempt, which has some success, to de-emphasize traditional concentration on Europe. A series of maps showing locations of sites reveals extensive coverage of all areas except Canada and non-Andean South America. However, inclusion of technical and theoretical terms is somewhat hit-or-miss. Geoarchaeological terms are well covered, but not statistical techniques. Archaeometry is included, but not remote sensing. Both processual and postprocessual schools receive their alloted half dozen or so terms. This dictionary, like all others in the field, is not close to being comprehensive. A comparison of the B section with that of Facts on File Dictionary of Archaeology, ed. by R.D. Whitehouse (CH, Mar'84), indicates an overlap of about 40%, with each work taking an equal share of the unique terms. Although this new dictionary does not replace older ones, it is recommended for all academic libraries. J. C. Wanser; Hiram College
