School Library Journal Review

Gr 8 Up-- In a collection of essays, articles, and book excerpts, this anthology attempts to explore the problem of unwarranted attacks by police against civilians. The articles all come from different sources and represent a variety of views, e.g., the leftist Guardian newspaper; the conservative John Birch Society's magazine, The New American . Because there are so many sources of articles, writing styles vary considerably. Police brutality, however, is not explored retrospectively in much detail. Of 31 articles, 27 (or 87%) were written in reaction to the well-publicized beating of Rodney King in 1991. Many of those articles can be found in their original sources; still, the helpful index may aid students in finding particular aspects of the topic, and those searching for material for debates or essays may find this a good place to start. --Marilyn Long Graham, Lee County Library System, Fort Myers, FL (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 9-12. Two volumes in the new Current Controversies series (an outgrowth of the Opposing Viewpoints series) review complex and timely issues through a variety of articles and book excerpts. Focusing more on specific aspects of the subject than does AIDS: Opposing Viewpoints, which explores matters in print-debate style, The AIDS Crisis addresses such topics as funding, treatment, testing, and controlling the spread of HIV. Police Brutality expands on an issue briefly touched upon in Criminal Justice: Opposing Viewpoints, discussing the question of whether police brutality is a national crisis, examining the social, economic, and psychological causes of brutality, and looking at reforms. Like the Opposing Viewpoints titles, these are high in quality. The articles have been selected for their long-range applicability as well as for their representation of different perspectives. Short quotes in bold type break up the long passages of text. The slightly enlarged format and extra leading will appeal to students, who will also like the annotated table of contents and comprehensive overviews that introduce some of the chapters. (Shorter chapter prefaces give a concise introduction, but the more expansive overviews provide a perspective not otherwise readily available.) These are excellent resources for research or debate that will rouse students interested in contemporary and controversial topics. Each book includes a bibliography and a descriptive list of related organizations. Additional titles are listed in the Series Roundup of this issue. ~--Karen Hutt
