Booklist Review

A commonsense guide to sports injuries-how they occur and how to prevent, recognize, and treat them-emphasizes fitness as a lifelong goal. Science writer Edelson considers directly and without condescension the untrained and the amateur as well as the serious athlete on a rigorous schedule. He discusses what happens to the body during exercise; gives advice on diet, equipment, and training programs; and describes danger signs and treatment for a range of injuries from blisters and shin splints to potentially fatal heatstroke. He also looks at various sports medicine specialists (including the general team trainer and those who practice sophisticated medical technology); a separate chapter covers drug therapy and abuse. Anecdotes about star athletes add interest, as do photographs showing them in action, though some of the photographs are merely decorative. Unfortunately, there is no documentation, even for the studies that have proved the benefits of exercise. Included are a brief bibliography, detailed glossary, appendix of organizations, index, and the usual series introductory essay by the surgeon general. Gr. 7-10.
