This book breaks new ground with the integration of geography, oceanography, plankton and benthic biology, as well as fish, to present a comprehensive account of the ecology of the tropical ocean. Proceeding from a description of the geomorphology, sediments, and vegetation of tropical continental shelves and the oceanography of tropical regions, the authors describe the benthos, plankton, and fish communities of tropical seas. An examination of the production of plant and animal life in tropical oceans is presented together with the numerical population biology of fish and invertebrates.

Includes indexes.

Bibliography: p. 335-370.

CHOICE Review

A major synthesizing contribution to the literature of biological oceanography. Despite a strong slant to fisheries ecology, basic scientific principles and research dominate and provide the framework for interpreting tropical marine fish population processes as well as tropical oceanic communities and ecosystems. The authors convince by examples that basic studies are prerequisite to application and management. Noting that processes important for understanding tropical coastal fishery dynamics may be driven by events and ocean or more away, they thoroughly cover geography and circulation of tropical oceans over a broad array of spatial and temporal scales. The fish- and fishery-oriented sections are organized regionally. Other chapters cover productivity and energetics of benthic and planktonic ecosystems and dynamics of invertebrate as well as fish populations. The authors tackle current and difficult ecological problems with clear and lively writing, their information is up to date, and they air both sides of current controversies. More than 50 pages are devoted to references and to author, geographic, and taxonomic indexes. Unfortunately, some illustrations are rather small and crude, data in others is not keyed or explained, and there are few maps of the regions discussed. Recommended for libraries with holdings in marine biology and oceanography.-A.J. Kohn, University of Washington
